and prolonged ventilation needs.
Tracheostomy
Tracheostomy is a surgical procedure in which an opening is created in the front of the neck into the trachea (windpipe) to establish a direct airway. A tube is inserted through this opening to facilitate breathing.
It is commonly performed in cases of airway obstruction, prolonged ventilation, severe trauma, or certain neurological conditions. The procedure may be temporary or permanent depending on the underlying condition.
Tracheostomy can improve breathing, reduce airway resistance, and aid in airway clearance. While generally safe, it requires proper care to prevent complications such as infection, tube blockage, or bleeding.
